BOYS
Music supervisor for stage performance, Black Box Teater (2022)
BOYS is a choreographed concert performed by a group of teenage boys aged 15 - 19 years. The boys come from different parts of the Oslo region, with different experiences and interests in music and performative art. During a long period of time they have met and got to know each other through music, movement and themes that interest them. Together they have made a selection of songs where different genres such as pop, folk music and rap are mixed and staged.
Choreographer Marie Bergby Handeland´s starting point for BOYS is a curiousity towards what kind of community that may develop in a group of boys, what force, vulnerability, solemnity and humour may develop. Severeral of Bergby Handelands works are driven by a wish to create larger bodily communities. She seeks to turn up the volume on bodies and voices she thinks we should listen to and reveal latent choreographies in people and spaces that do not necessarily know they have it in them.
Working closely with Bergby Handeland, the project involved developing an environment where this group of boys could safely meet and express themselves in songs, lyrics, and live performance. Never having met before, during the process severeal of the boys created music together, many of them for the first time.
BOYS won Subjektprisen 2022 for best stage performance of the year.
Gold glittering on teenage life! The teenage boys on stage alternate between fumbling presence to explosive, virtuous dance numbers. This drives the audience almost into ecstacy.
